TrailDot collects no personal data whatsoever, and makes no network connections at all. Your location never leaves your device — the app contains no networking code to send data anywhere.

Your location

TrailDot asks for your location while you are using the app, so it can display where you are standing on the paper map or GeoPDF you imported. It also reads the compass heading to indicate the direction you are facing.

Your position is used solely to render a live indicator on screen, and for nothing else.
It is never recorded: the app keeps no track log, no breadcrumb history, and no record of places you have visited.
It is never transmitted, because the app makes no network requests of any kind.
The app does not request background or "always" location access. It terminates reading your location immediately when you leave the map screen.

If you calibrate a map by standing at a landmark, the coordinates you capture are stored alongside that map on your device to maintain alignment. They remain strictly on your device with the map.

The camera

TrailDot asks for camera access only so you can scan a physical paper trail map or trailhead sign. The camera is active only while the scanner interface is open.

What the app stores, and where

Your imported maps and their calibration data are stored in the app's dedicated local storage on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no cloud synchronization. Deleting the app removes your maps and their calibrations.

Maps

TrailDot uses no third-party map or tile server. The maps are the documents you import. Apple Maps is utilized in one optional interface only — an optional location picker for selecting a known landmark's coordinates during manual calibration — and is governed by the Apple Privacy Policy.

There are no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising identifiers, and no tracking as defined by Apple's App Tracking Transparency.

Children

The app collects no data from anyone, of any age.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and the updated terms are published on this page.
